At v2 we use 316 L.V.M.ESTM-F-138-97 implant grade surgical steel, it is the highest quality implant grade surgical steel available today. The "L" refers to the low carbon content which is essential to avoid allergic reactions and insure proper healing. The "VM" stands for vacuum melted in oxygen free environment so that there is less carbon in the finished piece. F138, designated by the (European Society for Testing and Materials), means surgical implant grade. Consumers have to be careful, because it is possible to have 316L steel which is not implant grade and can cause reaction, which is why it is essential to use 316 L.V.M. If the type of surgical steel is not precise it will not conform to the European directive. Materials in 316 L.V.M. have been deployed successfully as implants in contact with soft tissue and bone for over a decade. It is the preferred material of Professional piercers.
